A Promising Career Cut Short

Charnice Avia Milton, a dedicated journalist born on June 19, 1987, in Washington, D.C., was known for her commitment to covering the communities east of the Anacostia River. Despite facing challenges such as a severe stutter and symptoms similar to Asperger's syndrome, she earned a master's degree in journalism from Syracuse University. Milton's passion for storytelling led her to work for Capital Community News, where she reported on local events and issues, giving a voice to underrepresented neighborhoods. Her promising career was tragically cut short on May 27, 2015, when she was fatally shot while waiting for a bus in Southeast D.C.

The Night of the Tragedy

On the evening of her death, Milton had covered a community meeting near Eastern Market and was on her way home. At approximately 9:40 p.m., while waiting for a bus at the intersection of Good Hope Road and Naylor Road, she was struck by a stray bullet. Authorities believe the gunman, riding in a group of dirt bike and all-terrain vehicle riders, opened fire with the intention of hitting another individual.
