Maurice Scott, a 15-year-old honor roll student and standout basketball player at Somerset Prep School in Southeast Washington, D.C., was tragically murdered on May 26, 2019. On that fateful morning, Maurice had completed his chores and informed his mother, Monique Scott, that he was heading to a nearby convenience store to purchase eggs for breakfast. The store was merely a block away from his school and two blocks from his home in the Congress Heights neighborhood. As he approached the store, a gunman emerged from a car and indiscriminately opened fire, striking four individuals. Maurice was fatally shot in the head, while two women and a 9-year-old girl sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The assailant fled the scene, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

A Mother's Grief and a Twin's Loss

The impact of Maurice's death reverberated deeply within his family. Monique Scott recounted the harrowing moment she learned of her son's shooting: "He said, 'I did my chores. I'll be right back.
