On the afternoon of August 9, 2016, the tranquility of East Oakland was shattered by the sound of gunfire. At approximately 3:09 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 7400 block of Fresno Street, near 73rd Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 24-year-old Marnee Causey lying on the ground, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Despite immediate attention, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding her death were as mysterious as they were tragic, leaving a community in mourning and a family seeking answers.
A Young Life with a Passion for Justice
Marnee Causey was more than just a victim; she was a vibrant young woman with a deep commitment to social justice. In 2008, as a student at Berkeley High School, she actively participated in protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
