Christon Barlow, a 52-year-old lifelong resident of Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, was known for his dedication to helping others. After recovering from a week-and-a-half-long coma in December 2014, he moved into the Bronzeville Park Skilled Living and Nursing Center. There, he quickly became a beloved figure among both staff and residents, often assisting those with mobility issues by running errands and providing transportation. His sister, Phyllys Barlow-Greene, noted that he was so well-regarded that the nursing home hired him as a transporter for patients and to run errands for nurses and residents. 

The Tragic Evening

On the evening of June 23, 2015, Barlow was performing one of his routine errands, picking up items for the nursing home staff and residents. At approximately 8:30 p.m., near the intersection of 35th Street and Indiana Avenue—just a block south of the nursing home—gunfire erupted. Barlow was one of four individuals shot in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital about half an hour later.
