The Fateful Evening

On the evening of January 24, 2010, 83-year-old Huan Zhou Chen disembarked from the SFMTA T-Line light rail vehicle at the intersection of Third Street and Oakdale Avenue in San Francisco. He was en route to his assisted living facility, a routine journey that tragically turned fatal. At approximately 5:58 p.m., as Mr. Chen walked along the 1600 block of Oakdale, he was suddenly attacked by a group of six male juveniles. The assailants struck him on the back of his head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the sidewalk. The juveniles fled the scene, leaving Mr. Chen bleeding and disoriented.

Immediate Aftermath

Passersby quickly summoned emergency services, and Mr. Chen was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. After a period of hospitalization, he was discharged and returned to his residence. However, his condition deteriorated, and on March 19, 2010, nearly two months after the assault, Mr. Chen succumbed to complications resulting from the attack.
