A Routine Evening Turns Tragic

On the evening of February 2, 1992, 25-year-old Richard Anthony Martin Jr. was walking westbound on the north sidewalk of the 4500 block of University Avenue in San Diego. The area, known for its bustling activity, was familiar territory for Martin. As he continued his walk, two young African American males turned onto University Avenue from Chamoune Avenue, positioning themselves directly behind him.

The Unprovoked Attack

Witnesses observed the two youths as they approached Martin. Without any apparent provocation, one of the young men suddenly turned and punched Martin in the face, shouting, "You shouldn't have messed with us." The force of the blow caused Martin to fall, striking his head on the pavement.
