A Community Shattered by Violence

On the evening of April 4, 2019, the Deanwood neighborhood in Northeast Washington, D.C., was rocked by a violent incident that left two young men dead and a community grappling with grief and unanswered questions. At approximately 8:15 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 4900 block of Nash Street NE. Upon arrival, they discovered 23-year-old Jobe McDowney and 21-year-old Desimon Richardson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the stairwell of an apartment building. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jobe McDowney, a resident of Southeast D.C., was remembered by family and friends as a hardworking individual with a generous spirit. His cousin, Dion McDowney, described him as someone who "had a loving heart, and he cared about people." Jobe was known for his dedication to his family, especially his young son, and often juggled multiple jobs to provide for his loved ones.
