A Dedicated Nurse's Final Journey

In the early hours of July 23, 2010, 53-year-old Cristorey Mariano, a dedicated nurse employed at Kaiser Permanente, concluded his shift and made his way back to his residence in Oakland, California. Mariano, who had relocated from the Philippines, was committed to providing a better life for his family, who remained in his homeland. His routine commute home in the quiet pre-dawn hours was abruptly and tragically interrupted.

The Fatal Encounter

At approximately 2 a.m., as Mariano exited his vehicle near his home, he was met with unforeseen violence. Gunshots shattered the early morning silence, and Mariano was fatally struck on the sidewalk adjacent to his residence. A nearby neighbor recounted the harrowing events: "I was asleep at about 1:30 a.m. and I just heard gunshots and screeching yelling, a lot of yelling."
