A Family's American Dream Shattered
In December 2016, the Calmo family, originally from Guatemala, faced an unimaginable tragedy in Oakland, California. Ignacio Calmo, a 32-year-old construction worker, had emigrated to the United States 11 years prior, seeking a better life for his loved ones. His dedication to providing for his family and his active involvement in their church community painted the picture of a man deeply committed to his faith and family.
A Night of Mourning Turns Deadly
On the night of December 18, 2016, the Calmo family attended a funeral service at Iglesias de Dios, or Church of God, located in East Oakland. While the congregation mourned inside, Ignacio stepped outside for a brief respite. Unbeknownst to him, a confrontation was escalating within the church, which soon spilled out onto the streets. In the ensuing chaos, gunfire erupted, and Ignacio was fatally struck. Three other Oakland residents sustained minor injuries but survived the incident. Ignacio's 12-year-old daughter, Heidy, rushed outside upon hearing the commotion, only to witness her father's final moments.
