Introduction to a Life Cut Short

On July 8, 2017, the city of Louisville, Kentucky, was shaken by the tragic death of Stephanie F. Kittrell, a 50-year-old mother whose life was abruptly ended by gun violence. Discovered on a sidewalk in the 1200 block of West Hill Street near the Park Hill neighborhood, Stephanie had been fatally shot just days after celebrating her milestone birthday on July 4. The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) responded to the scene shortly after 5 p.m., where she was pronounced dead. 

A Family Plagued by Tragedy

Stephanie's untimely death was not the first instance of gun violence to devastate her family. In May 2009, her son, Raymone Shirley, was also a victim of homicide. The compounded grief took a toll on Stephanie's only surviving child, Lashay Duncan, who struggled with depression and substance abuse, ultimately leading to her overdose shortly after her mother's death.
