Around 6 a.m., an intruder broke into the residence where 40-year-old Richard James Carns was staying. Awakened by the disturbance, Carns confronted the intruder, leading to a violent altercation. The assailant drew a firearm and fatally shot Carns, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
