A Community Shattered by Unthinkable Violence

On the evening of September 15, 2017, the Brighton Park neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest Side was rocked by a horrific act of violence. At approximately 8:35 p.m., residents were startled by the sound of rapid gunfire. Responding to multiple 911 calls, Chicago police officers arrived at the 4700 block of South Fairfield Avenue to a devastating scene: a bullet-riddled sedan idling near the corner of 47th and Fairfield, its four occupants unresponsive and fatally wounded.

The Victims: Lives Cut Tragically Short

Inside the vehicle were four individuals whose lives were brutally ended. Ida Arvizu, 28, was seven months pregnant at the time of her death. A dedicated dental hygienist, Ida was the mother of a 7-year-old daughter and was expecting a son she had already named Reymundo. Also in the car were brothers Joel Sandoval, 24, and Miguel Sandoval, 27, along with their friend, 21-year-old Michelle Adrian Cano. Joel Sandoval was identified as Ida's ex-boyfriend and the father of her children.
