A Fateful Meeting

On the night of April 2, 2014, the lives of two young individuals, 19-year-old Wilneka Shanicee Pennyman and 20-year-old Marquis Sams, were tragically cut short in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood. The two friends were conversing inside a parked white Chevy Cavalier near NE 63rd Street and First Avenue when an SUV drove by and opened fire. Sams was seated in the driver's seat, while Pennyman stood outside the vehicle. The sudden eruption of gunfire shattered the quiet of the early morning hours, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The Immediate Aftermath

The drive-by shooting occurred just before 2:00 a.m. Sams was pronounced dead at the scene, succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds inside the car. Pennyman, despite being shot several times, managed to run to a nearby house where she collapsed. She was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital but, tragically, did not survive her injuries.
