The Fateful Evening

In the early hours of August 14, 2016, a vibrant birthday celebration at Prime Development, an art gallery and streetwear shop located at 322 15th Street in downtown Oakland, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy. The event drew a large crowd, with approximately 300 attendees gathered to enjoy the festivities. Among them was 20-year-old Craig Fletcher-Cooks, a Berkeley High School alumnus who had graduated in 2014 and was known for his participation in youth rugby and the school's football team. Accompanied by his girlfriend, Craig was there to partake in the night's celebrations.

The Confrontation

The joyous atmosphere took a dark turn when four young men, described as being in their 20s, approached Craig's girlfriend, attempting to coerce her into dancing with them. Demonstrating his protective nature, Craig intervened, informing the men that she was with him. This act of defense escalated into a violent altercation.
