The Fateful Night
In the early hours of September 18, 2016, tragedy struck Chicago's Old Town neighborhood. At approximately 4 a.m., 20-year-old Marquese Fleming and a 30-year-old companion were exiting a fast-food restaurant on the 100 block of West Division Street. As they stepped onto the street, an assailant opened fire, shooting both men in the back. The shooter then fled south on Clark Street in a Chevrolet Tahoe. Both victims were rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Marquese was pronounced dead at 4:55 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His companion survived but was listed in serious condition.
The Victim: A Young Life Cut Short
Born on October 8, 1995, Marquese Fleming was a resident of the 100 block of North Larrabee Street in Chicago. At just 20 years old, his life was abruptly ended in an act of violence that has left his family and community grieving.
