The Fateful Evening
On the night of March 23, 2017, the tranquility of San Diego's Mountain View neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. At approximately 10:50 p.m., residents reported hearing multiple shots in the 3700 block of Ocean View Boulevard. Responding swiftly, San Diego Police Department officers arrived to a grim scene: a man lying in the street with apparent gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by both officers and paramedics, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 47-year-old James Gerald Arberry, a local resident of San Diego.
The Investigation Begins
In the aftermath of the shooting, homicide detectives from the San Diego Police Department were dispatched to the scene to initiate an investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that an unidentified suspect, described as a Black male wearing a dark grey sweatshirt and khaki pants, approached Arberry as he exited a nearby store and opened fire. The assailant then fled the scene on foot, disappearing into the night.
