A Life Cut Short on the Ice

On November 28, 1999, 32-year-old John Edward Mayfield vanished near Galena, Alaska, when the snowmachine he was riding fell into an open hole in the ice at the junction of the Koyukuk and Yukon Rivers. Despite extensive search efforts, his body was never recovered, and he is presumed to have drowned.
