A Routine Day Turns Tragic

On November 20, 1990, John Louis Heck, a 29-year-old fisherman from Dillingham, Alaska, was engaged in his usual duties aboard the 100-foot fishing vessel, Surland. The vessel was operating approximately 90 miles northwest of the entrance to Point Moeller, a region known for its challenging maritime conditions. During the course of routine crab fishing operations, Heck became entangled in a crab line and was pulled overboard. Despite immediate rescue efforts and extensive search operations, he was never located. 

The Immediate Aftermath and Search Efforts

Following the incident, the crew of the Surland initiated emergency protocols and contacted the Alaska State Troopers. Search and rescue operations were promptly launched, encompassing aerial and maritime resources. The search covered a vast area around the location where Heck was last seen, but despite the concerted efforts, no trace of him was found.
