In September 1995, Shakti Eppling, a 39-year-old woman from King Salmon, Alaska, embarked on a hiking expedition through the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a remote and rugged area within Katmai National Park. Accompanied by two companions, the group aimed to traverse the challenging terrain, known for its volcanic ash landscapes and treacherous river crossings. Their journey was a testament to their adventurous spirit and appreciation for Alaska's natural beauty.
The Fateful River Crossing
On September 17, 1995, the trio attempted to ford the Lethe River, approximately six miles above the confluence known as Three Forks. During this crossing, Shakti was swept downstream by the river's strong currents. Despite immediate search efforts, she vanished from sight. Her two companions survived the ordeal and later reported the incident to authorities. Subsequent searches led to the discovery of Shakti's backpack, but no other traces of her were found.
