Early Life and Family Background

Barbara Louise Cotton, affectionately known as Barb, was born on November 10, 1965, in Tioga, North Dakota, to parents Louise and John Cotton. She was the seventh of eight children in a large family that faced its share of challenges.

During her early childhood, the Cotton family resided in a modest one-bedroom trailer on a rural property. Despite her father John's stable employment with Montana-Dakota Utilities, the financial demands of raising a large family were considerable.

The early 1970s brought significant changes to Barb's life when her parents divorced. Following the separation, Louise moved to Williston, North Dakota, with her three youngest children: Kent, Barb, and Kathy.
