A Night Like Any Other

On July 3, 1999, the small town of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, buzzed with typical Independence Day weekend festivities. Among the celebrants was 20-year-old Brooke Henson, a free spirit known for her love of music and the outdoors. That evening, Brooke hosted a gathering at her family home while her parents attended a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina. When her parents returned around 2:00 AM on July 4, they found Brooke sitting on the front porch, seemingly reflecting on the night's events. 

A Late-Night Departure

During the brief conversation with her parents, Brooke mentioned having had a disagreement with her boyfriend, Ricky "Shaun" Shirley, earlier that evening. Expressing a desire to clear her head, she informed them of her intention to walk to a nearby store to purchase cigarettes, despite the late hour. Departing around 2:30 AM, Brooke was last seen walking along Henderson Drive toward Willis' store, located at the corner of Hawkins Road and Poinsett Highway, approximately two blocks from her residence.
