On July 19, 2016, the city of Chicago was shaken by the tragic death of 17-year-old Darrell Peden. Officers responding to a call of a person shot around 9:25 p.m. found Peden lying in the street in the 4400 block of West West End Avenue with gunshot wounds to his torso. Despite immediate medical attention, Peden succumbed to his injuries, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew him. To date, his murder remains unsolved, with authorities continuing to seek leads to bring justice to his family.
Remembering Darrell: A Teacher's Perspective
In the aftermath of this senseless act, reflections on Peden's life emerged, painting a picture of a young man full of potential and charisma. One of his high school teachers, writing under the pseudonym Ann Mastrofsky, shared a heartfelt letter detailing her experiences with Darrell. She described him as "charismatic" and "intractable," noting his rare attendance in class and his penchant for socializing.
