The Initial Disappearance

On July 27, 2021, the small community of Fruitland, Idaho, was shaken by the sudden disappearance of five-year-old Michael Joseph Vaughan, affectionately known as "Monkey." Between 6:40 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., Michael vanished near his residence on Southwest 9th Street and Arizona Avenue. Despite immediate and extensive search efforts, no trace of him was found. The initial investigation yielded few leads, leaving family, friends, and law enforcement grasping for answers.

Emerging Suspects and Initial Arrests

In November 2022, a significant development occurred when authorities received a credible tip pointing to the residence of Sarah and Stacey Wondra on Redwing Street, merely a half-mile from Michael's home. Investigators executed a search warrant and conducted a thorough excavation of the property, suspecting that Michael's remains might be buried there. During this operation, cadaver dogs alerted to the presence of human remains, but no physical evidence was recovered. Sarah Wondra was subsequently arrested and charged with failing to report a death, though these charges were later dropped. Her husband, Stacey, was already in custody on unrelated charges.
