Introduction: The Fateful Journey

In May 2022, a three-year-old Nicaraguan girl named Sofía Abigail Caballero Huete embarked on a perilous journey with her mother, Irma Yaritza Huete Iglesias, and her uncle, Nolvin Huete. Their goal was to reunite with Sofía's father, Hanier Caballero, who had migrated to the United States earlier that year and settled in Wisconsin. Leaving their hometown of Ocotal in Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua, they traversed thousands of kilometers through Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico, facing numerous hardships along the way. Their journey culminated at the banks of the Rio Bravo, also known as the Rio Grande, near Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, where they planned to cross into the United States. 

The Tragic Attempt to Cross the Rio Bravo

On the night of May 17, 2022, around 11:00 p.m., the family joined a group of approximately one hundred migrants attempting to cross the Rio Bravo. They formed a human chain to withstand the river's strong currents. Sofía rode on her uncle Nolvin's shoulders, with her mother Irma following closely behind. As they neared the U.S. shore, Nolvin lost his footing and fell, causing Sofía to be swept away by the swift currents. Irma also struggled against the forceful waters. Nolvin managed to reach the U.S. side, but tragically, Irma's lifeless body was recovered the following day, with Sofía's identification documents still in her possession.
