On September 25, 1988, a group of hunters in Homer Township, Michigan, stumbled upon a decomposed body in a field near 29 Mile Road and V Drive South. The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene, but the advanced state of decomposition hindered immediate identification. The case quickly grew cold as leads were scarce and forensic technology of the time offered limited assistance.

Identification After Years

It wasn't until the early 2000s that advancements in DNA technology provided a breakthrough. Investigators successfully identified the remains as those of James William Burton, born on September 16, 1935, in Bland County, Virginia.
