A Night of Celebration Turns Tragic

On the evening of August 24, 2003, 21-year-old Raul Aguila attended a friend's party in the Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego. As midnight approached, the gathering began to wind down. Aguila and a friend decided to leave, departing in his car. Their chosen route led them up 33rd Street, an area that would soon become the backdrop for a devastating event.

An Unprovoked Attack

As Aguila's vehicle proceeded along the 400 block of 33rd Street, they encountered a group of men loitering in the area. These individuals, believed to be local gang members, suddenly launched an unprovoked assault on Aguila's car, hurling bottles and rocks as it passed by.
