A Promising Life Cut Short
In the early hours of October 29, 2017, the Oakland Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter activation around 1:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of 8th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of 20-year-old Brandon Pakeman, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Brandon, a graduate of KIPP King Collegiate High School in San Lorenzo, was attending Chabot College with aspirations of traveling the world, particularly to Africa, to explore his roots. His family emphasized that he was not involved in any gang activity and had a deep passion for basketball, baseball, and football.
