A Life Cut Short in Chatham

On a chilly February evening in 2016, the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side was shaken by a tragic event. Carlos James Hemphill Jr., a 33-year-old resident, was standing in the 8100 block of South Harvard Avenue just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016, when an unidentified vehicle drove by. Without warning, someone inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Hemphill multiple times in the lower body. ๎ˆ†

The Aftermath of the Shooting

Following the shooting, Hemphill was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Despite the medical team's best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries approximately 12 hours later, at 10:26 a.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2016.
