On the evening of July 2, 1979, at approximately 9:30 p.m., motorists traveling along West 64th Avenue, about half a mile west of Easley Road in Golden, Colorado, encountered a grim scene. They discovered the lifeless body of a man lying in the roadway. Authorities were promptly notified, and upon arrival, they identified the victim as 27-year-old John Lilly. The cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds.

John Lilly was known within certain circles for his involvement in drug distribution.
