A Life Cut Short

In the early hours of August 23, 2016, the city of Chicago was once again shaken by the tragic loss of life due to gun violence. Johnell Johnson, a 37-year-old resident of Chicago's West Side and a known member of the Black Gangsters, was found lifeless in the street, a fatal gunshot wound to his face. His death added to the alarming tally of 91 homicides that plagued the city that August, marking it as the deadliest month Chicago had witnessed in two decades. 

The West Side of Chicago, particularly neighborhoods like East Garfield Park, has long grappled with systemic issues such as poverty, unemployment, and inadequate access to education. These challenges have fostered an environment where gang affiliations often provide a misguided sense of security and belonging.
