A Promising Life Cut Short
On May 9, 2017, the South Deering neighborhood on Chicago's Far South Side was shaken by a brutal act of violence that claimed the life of 17-year-old Kaveon D. Anthoni Walton. Kaveon, a resident of the area, was walking west on 95th Street near Yates Avenue around 12:21 p.m. Accompanied by a 22-year-old man, their routine stroll turned deadly when two masked individuals emerged from a black SUV and opened fire. The assailants then fled east on 95th Street, leaving chaos and tragedy in their wake.
The Immediate Aftermath
First responders arrived promptly, finding Kaveon with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, right leg, and right arm. Despite being rushed to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, he was pronounced dead at 1:32 p.m. The 22-year-old companion also suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
