Discovery of the Body

On August 9, 2014, at approximately 10:03 a.m., an officer was flagged down to check on an individual who had been found unconscious behind a building in the 00-100 block of East Springfield Avenue, Champaign. Upon investigation, officers discovered the body of Lonnie D. Scheel near the railroad tracks behind a commercial building located at 27 E. Springfield Avenue. Scheel, known to be a homeless individual in the area, was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

Lonnie D. Scheel, 50 years old at the time of his death, was experiencing homelessness in Champaign, Illinois. He had been having trouble making contact with his family.
