A Routine Stop Turns Deadly
On the night of August 25, 2017, 35-year-old Matthias Bowen from South Holland, Illinois, made a routine stop at a gas station in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. Located in the 5900 block of South Morgan Street, this area was familiar to many residents but had its share of challenges. As Bowen refueled his vehicle around 11:20 p.m., an unexpected and violent event unfolded that would leave the community in shock.
Ambushed at the Pump
Without warning, a Chrysler 300 approached the gas station, and at least two armed individuals exited the vehicle. They opened fire on Bowen, striking him in the head. The assailants then fled the scene, possibly taking Bowen's vehicle with them. The suddenness and brutality of the attack left little time for Bowen to react or seek cover.
