Jess Allen Sixkiller, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, was a trailblazer and staunch advocate for Native American rights. Born on March 2, 1937, he broke barriers by becoming the first Native American detective in the Chicago Police Department. His commitment to justice extended beyond law enforcement; he was the founder and first director of the National Urban Indian Organization, tirelessly working to address the unique challenges faced by urban Indigenous populations. His educational pursuits led him to Yale University, reflecting his dedication to personal growth and community empowerment.
A Tragic Home Invasion
In the early hours of September 25, 2015, tragedy struck the Sixkiller residence in Phoenix, Arizona. At approximately 3 a.m., an intruder forcibly entered their home near 55th Avenue and Camelback Road. Jess's wife, Tammy, awoke to the commotion and, sensing danger, secured herself in another room and called 911. Upon arrival, police discovered signs of forced entry and found Jess Sixkiller deceased from a gunshot wound.
