William "Willie" Cooper, a 58-year-old community activist, was a beacon of hope in Chicago's Far South Side. As the principal officer of Lilydale Outreach Workers for a Better Community, Cooper dedicated his life to providing employment opportunities for local teenagers and assisting ex-offenders in their reintegration into society. His unwavering commitment to diffusing violence and mentoring youth earned him the affectionate title of the "Mayor of 95th Street." Friends and colleagues recall his relentless efforts to mediate conflicts and foster a safer environment for all.
The Tragic Day
On the afternoon of July 15, 2017, tragedy struck near the headquarters of Cooper's nonprofit organization. At approximately 4:15 p.m., while walking in the 100 block of West 95th Street, Cooper was approached by a dark-colored vehicle. Without warning, occupants of the car opened fire, fatally striking him in the mouth and torso.
