A Promising Young Life Cut Short
On the night of October 10, 2017, the city of Oakland was shaken by the tragic loss of 13-year-old Anibal Andres Ramirez. Anibal, an eighth-grade student at Frick Impact Academy, had recently finished dinner with his family when he received a text message around 9:51 p.m. The message prompted him to meet a friend on the 2600 block of Seminary Avenue, a location not far from his school. Tragically, upon arrival, Anibal was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. This senseless act marked him as the youngest homicide victim in Oakland for that year.
A Community in Mourning
In the wake of Anibal's death, the Oakland community rallied to support his grieving family. A vigil was held on Seminary Avenue, where community members gathered to console his mother and honor his memory. The family, originally from Guatemala and having been in the United States for just a year, faced unimaginable pain compounded by language barriers and cultural adjustments.
