A Celebration Turned Tragic

On July 28, 2016, a community gathering in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood took a devastating turn. Approximately 100 people had assembled in the 800-block of West 50th Place to honor the memory of a man who was killed in a gang shooting in 2012. The atmosphere, initially filled with remembrance and solidarity, was shattered when a dispute over a parking spot escalated into deadly violence.

The Fatal Confrontation

The altercation began when two women were holding a parking spot for a friend who was circling the block. A man, later identified as 25-year-old Denzel M. Childs, confronted them over the space.
