A Fateful Voyage

On January 9, 2024, five young men from Sitka, Alaska, embarked on a hunting expedition to Chichagof Island, approximately 40 miles northwest of their hometown. The group included 18-year-olds Sayer Tuzon and Darren Borbridge, both known for their adventurous spirits and deep connection to the Alaskan wilderness. The trip was intended as a brief retreat, a chance to engage in the time-honored tradition of hunting in the rugged terrains of the island.

The Incident

As the group made their return journey that afternoon, their 26-foot aluminum vessel encountered severe weather conditions in the turbulent waters of Khaz Bay. Around 4:35 p.m., the boat capsized amidst rough seas and freezing temperatures. A distress signal was transmitted, prompting an immediate response from the U.S. Coast Guard. A helicopter from Air Station Sitka arrived on the scene by 5:15 p.m., locating the overturned vessel approximately 25 miles north of Sitka.
