A Mother's Pursuit of a Fresh Start
In 2016, seeking a new beginning, Gaylin Rose relocated with her four daughters—Keyana Davis (11), Keyara Phillips (9), Kerrielle McDonald (7), and Kionnie Welch (5)—to Flora, Indiana. The family settled into a two-story duplex, with the girls enrolling in local schools and joining the "Lafayette Diamonds" cheerleading squad. Rose secured employment at a nearby gas station, and the family quickly integrated into the community, with the girls often practicing their cheer routines on their front porch.
The Night of the Devastating Fire
On November 21, 2016, in the early hours of the morning, a fire engulfed the family's home. Rose, sleeping downstairs, awoke to the sounds of her daughters' screams and the sight of flames rapidly spreading. Despite her desperate attempts to reach her children, the intense heat and smoke thwarted her efforts. She suffered severe burns and was airlifted to Eskenazi's burn center.
