A Routine Voyage Turns Mysterious

On August 27, 1998, Mevlin Edward Kayouktuk, a 45-year-old Alaska Native from Nome, embarked on what was intended to be a routine boat trip from Wales to Little Diomede Island. Accompanied by four other adults and one child, the group set out across the Bering Strait—a region known for its treacherous waters and unpredictable weather. Tragically, none of the individuals aboard the vessel were ever seen again. Despite extensive search efforts, no trace of the boat or its passengers has been found, and the case remains unsolved to this day .

The Man Behind the Name

Mevlin Kayouktuk was a well-known figure in his community. Standing 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds, he was of American Indian/Alaska Native descent, with black hair and brown eyes.
