The Day He Disappeared

On April 26, 1996, Smith was last seen in Santa Cruz. Subsequently, his black 1985 Toyota pickup truck was discovered abandoned near mile marker 26.86 on Highway 9, a region characterized by its mountainous terrain and steep ravines. Inside the vehicle were all of Smith's personal belongings, but there was no sign of him. The location's challenging landscape, with trails leading west toward the Pacific Ocean, posed significant obstacles for search efforts. 
