A Quiet Night Turns Mysterious
On the evening of June 5, 1997, 29-year-old Robert Gene “Gene” Weems left his home on Julia Street in the Petersville neighborhood of Florence, Alabama, around 9:00 p.m. He departed without taking his identification, money, or necessary medication, and has not been seen since. This sudden disappearance was out of character for Gene, who, despite occasionally leaving home when stressed due to his bipolar disorder, always returned after a short time.
A Brief Glimmer of Hope
Three days after Gene's disappearance, on June 8, 1997, a credible sighting placed him walking along Cox Creek Parkway between North Wood Avenue and Jackson Road. This area was familiar to Gene, as he was known to walk there. His family, hopeful that he might be nearby, began searching the area.
Intensive Search Efforts
On June 23, 1997, the Lauderdale County "Crisis Action Team" conducted a ground search of the wooded areas around Cox Creek Parkway. The dense summer vegetation made the search challenging, and no trace of Gene was found. The following day, a water search of Cypress Creek was conducted, but again, no evidence surfaced.
Unconfirmed Sightings and Dead Ends
During the investigation, authorities received reports of possible sightings of Gene in Mississippi and Savannah, Tennessee. However, these leads could not be substantiated, and the individuals observed were never confirmed to be Gene.
