A Seasoned Outdoorsman

Walter H. Reinhard, a 66-year-old resident of Oro Valley, Arizona, was a man deeply connected to the outdoors. A Vietnam War veteran who served two tours as a Marine, Reinhard had undergone extensive survival training. After his military service, he continued his commitment to public service as a deputy sheriff. In retirement, he maintained his physical fitness through regular hiking excursions. His passion for hiking was well-known among his family and friends, symbolized by a sign on his door that read, "Gone Hiking".

The Fateful Trip to Yosemite

In September 2002, Reinhard embarked on a solo trip to Yosemite National Park. He arrived at the park on September 17, as confirmed by a 4:11 PM credit card transaction at a local gas station.
