A Routine Voyage Turns Tragic

On June 18, 2013, 25-year-old Allan Young, a deckhand from Chehalis, Washington, vanished while working aboard the fishing vessel Swift in Alaska’s Icy Strait, near the entrance to Excursion Inlet. The vessel was later found anchored and abandoned, prompting a large-scale search operation. Despite extensive efforts, Young's body was never recovered. 

The Search and Rescue Efforts

Upon discovering the unmanned Swift, the U.S. Coast Guard initiated a comprehensive search covering over 450 square miles. Assets deployed included the Coast Guard Cutter Liberty, a 45-foot response boat, two H-60 helicopters, the Civil Air Patrol, and the National Park Service. Despite these efforts, no trace of Young was found, and the search was suspended late Tuesday night. 

The Captain's Rescue Attempt

Tim Lane, the 47-year-old captain of the Swift from Sitka, attempted to rescue Young by launching a skiff. Lane also ended up in the water and was later found on a nearby beach suffering from mild hypothermia. He was transported to Juneau for treatment and was scheduled for discharge the following day. 

Theories and Speculations

The exact circumstances of Young's disappearance remain unclear. Reports indicate he was last seen entering the water without a flotation device, attempting to swim to shore. The reasons behind this action are unknown, leaving room for speculation about whether it was accidental or intentional. ...Read More
