A Quiet Life in a Remote Town
Cathleen Currie, a 60-year-old resident of Hyder, Alaska, lived a tranquil life in one of the state's most secluded communities. Hyder, nestled near the Canadian border, is known for its rugged terrain and sparse population. Currie was familiar with the area's wilderness, often spending time near the Salmon River, which flows close to her camp.
The Day She Disappeared
On June 21, 2012, Currie was last seen walking upstream near the Salmon River. She had reportedly planned to climb a mountain on the other side of the river. When she failed to return, concerned residents reported her missing on June 25, prompting an immediate search effort.
The Search Efforts
The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad, along with search-and-rescue dogs, Alaska State Troopers, and local volunteers, initiated an extensive search operation. Despite their efforts, only some footprints were found in the area, with no definitive evidence linking them to Currie. The challenging weather conditions further hampered the search, delaying helicopter deployments and limiting ground searches.
The Decision to Suspend the Search
After days of exhaustive searching without any substantial leads, authorities faced the difficult decision to suspend the search.
