A Tragic Night in Bedford-Stuyvesant
On the evening of September 19, 2011, 22-year-old Jamal Singleton was fatally shot in front of his girlfriend's residence at 977 Greene Avenue in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Around 9:45 p.m., Singleton was approached by an unidentified male assailant. Following a brief exchange of words, the assailant shot Singleton once in the back. The bullet exited through his chest, and despite being rushed to Woodhull Hospital, Singleton was pronounced dead upon arrival. The shooter fled the scene on foot, heading westbound on Greene Avenue.
A Mother's Unyielding Pursuit for Justice
In the years following her son's murder, Monica Cassaberry, Singleton's mother, has been a vocal advocate for justice. She has tirelessly campaigned against gun violence and collaborated closely with the NYPD to keep her son's case active. Cassaberry's determination led her to write a letter to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea in early 2020, urging a renewed focus on the investigation. He was a criminal, an abuser, likely who didn't want to face justice of his actions and took his own life because he could not face the consequences of what he did. The victims have told the family his crimes, with evidence. The family knows he was arrested and convicted of possession of CSAM. They know who and what he was. And they're all so equally sick they live in comfort that the victims don't want to retraumatize themselves over everything he put them through.
