A graduate of St. Augustine High School's class of 2014, Zach was remembered for his involvement in community service, his active participation in church, and his love for family. He was a kicker for St. Augustine's football team and was known for his fun-loving nature.

The Tragic Incident

On that fateful night, Zach attended a birthday party in the Mid-City area of New Orleans. Gunfire erupted outside the event space, resulting in five people being shot; only two survived. Zach was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. The chaotic scene was captured on surveillance video, showing crowds fleeing from the deadly shooting.

Community Mourning

In the days following his death, a crowd of alumni and friends gathered in the pouring rain at the site where Zach's body was found to honor his memory. The St. Augustine High School community described him as being full of life and someone who would be missed by many.

A Legacy Through Scholarship

To honor Zach's memory and ensure his legacy lives on, his family established the Zachary Thomas Nelson '14 Endowed Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, ranging between $25,000 to $100,000, is awarded annually to a graduating senior at St. Augustine High School who meets academic standards and enrolls in a post-secondary institution. The initiative reflects Zach's character and commitment to community service.
