Dustin Shirk, a 30-year-old Marine Corps veteran, was known for his unwavering dedication to his country and his community. Having served over eight years, including a tour in Iraq, Shirk's commitment to service was evident. Upon returning to Phoenix, he worked diligently at UPS and aspired to re-enlist in the Marines, focusing on his physical fitness to meet the rigorous standards. His routine often included late-night runs to accommodate his work schedule.

A Tragic Night at Cielito Park

In the early hours of July 26, 2016, Shirk embarked on one of his regular runs at Cielito Park, located near 35th and Campbell avenues in Phoenix. The park, a popular spot for local residents, had recently seen an influx of visitors due to the Pokémon Go phenomenon. Around 1 a.m., amidst more than a dozen park-goers, including several Pokémon Go players, Shirk was shot multiple times. Despite immediate assistance from witnesses, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
