On January 4, 1992, 27-year-old Monte Howard Bolton joined family for a holiday sail out to Anacapa Island, part of California’s Channel Islands National Park. What began as a short excursion to admire a dramatic coastline ended in a search that recovered one brother and left Monte unaccounted for—an absence that has persisted for decades.

The Brothers’ Plan to Explore Sea Caves

According to case records, Monte and his younger brother—described as in his early twenties—left the larger sailboat in an eight-foot dinghy to explore the island’s famed sea caves on Anacapa’s north side.
