On the evening of September 15, 2017, the Brighton Park neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest Side was shattered by a horrific act of violence. At approximately 8:35 p.m., residents were jolted by the sound of rapid gunfire. Responding to multiple 911 calls, Chicago police arrived at the 4700 block of South Fairfield Avenue to a gruesome scene: a bullet-riddled sedan idling near the corner, its occupants unresponsive. Inside the vehicle were Joel Sandoval, 24; his brother, Miguel Sandoval, 27; Michelle Cano, 21; and Ida Arvizu, 28, who was seven months pregnant.
